SAORI Weaving

A one-on-one hands-on weaving experience

Learn to weave at your own pace. Each session, facilitated by a licensed social worker, focuses on the needs and desires of the individual. SAORI is a contemporary hand weaving process founded by a Misao Jo more than 40 years ago in Japan.  A core principle of SAORI is that everyone can express oneself freely regardless of age, gender, disability or intellectual aptitude. Individuals are encouraged to follow their intutition — there are no rules, no mistakes, and no complicated patterns to follow.

No prior experience necessary. All materials will be provided for use during the session.

Weaving can be beneficial in so many ways:

  • because it simultaneoulsy uses both the dominant and non-dominate hand, weaving promotes hand-eye coordination, visual tracking, and awareness of spacial concepts
  • slow, repetive motion promotes relaxation
  • improves fine motor skills and strengthens muscles used for pincer grip
  • improves focus and sustained concentration
